I've lost something overboard on occasion, and I'd guess most readers have done so as well. A useful piece of kit for any boat is a strong magnet on a lanyard with a loop that can be attached to a length of line long enough to get to the bottom of the body of water.
Mine came from Amazon, Neosmuk Fishing Magnets, 100LBS+ Pull Up Force 1.26 inches in Diameter Rare Earth Magnet with Stainless Steel Eye Bolt for Retrieving in River and Magnet Fishing(Silvery White,Pack of 4). I haven't tried the magnet fishing yet but I'm sure it works well for ferrous fish.
